Doctoral studies

The purpose of studies for the doctor of science is to prepare scientists who would be able to independently conduct research and experimental (social, cultural) development work, and to solve scientific problems.

The purpose of studies for the doctor of arts is to prepare artists researchers who would be able to create, interpret and develop research based on art practice.

Graduation requirements include doctoral dissertation and exams (in the case of Doctor of Science) or arts project (in the case of Doctor of Arts). The artistic research project consists of two parts: an artistic work and scientific research.

Both research degrees (Mokslo daktaras, Meno daktaras) are certified by the Doctor Diploma (Daktaro diplomas).

In the case of Mokslo daktaras, the diploma provides information that the holder of the diploma has defended a doctoral dissertation (disertacija) in an appropriate research area (e.g. social sciences, humanities, biomedical sciences, technological sciences, etc.) and research field  (e.g. economics, philology, mathematics, civil engineering, medicine, history, etc.) and was awarded the Mokslo daktaras degree.

In the case of Meno daktaras, the diploma provides information that the holder of the diploma has defended an artistic research project (meno doktorantūros projektas) in an appropriate study field (e.g. music,  theatre and film studies, fine arts, design, etc.) and was awarded the Meno daktaras degree.

The newest systematic knowledge in the field of scientific research or artistic activity which he/she is able to use when creating new fundamental knowledge and ideas, and solving activity related tasks of the strategic nature.

Research skills

Graduate has the ability to offer, analyze, synthesize, systematize and assess critically new and complex ideas by searching for original scientific strategic solutions and strategic solutions of artistic activity and of having public significance, and by solving complex issues related to science, society and cultural development, professional activity or artistic activity. Graduate has the ability to plan and implement fundamental and applied scientific researches or culture and art projects of a large extent which expand the limits of knowledge significantly.

Special abilities

Graduate has the ability to create original means and instruments of scientific research, studies, cultural and artistic activity and innovation development pursuant to the newest knowledge provided by scientific research. He/she has the ability to do intellectual, artistic and creative work in an autonomous manner.

Social abilities

Graduate has the ability to communicate with peers, scientific society and society by communicating novelties of his/her activity field and prospects of further development and develop creative activity and culture, and encourage technical, public and cultural progress favourable to society development.

Personal abilities

Graduate has the ability to improve and plan further his/her and expert team prospects of studying. He/she assumes responsibility to assess strategic solutions of his/her activity field critically and is able to react promptly to dynamic changes in society, economic, cultural and technological environment, and reveal and develop creative intellectual personal abilities.
